Conquer Shiny Object Sydnrome

My Shiny Object Syndrome Story

I suffer from shiny object syndrome

Shiny Object Syndrome

I went to my first Internet Marketing seminar in November 2011. I got a big buzz from that and could see a lot of avenues to apply some of the tools that were presented. I bought 3 packages

  • One to help in keyword research
  • One to help with push button site creation
  • One to learn how to use webinars

I could see exactly how those would fit in a strategy to build an Internet Marketing business. I made a good go for a while at using the push button site software and keyword research to build something of a keyword traffic engine. I never did finish. And I took years to use the webinar training program. Why?

  • I was not ready for that.
  • I did not know what I was going to talk about.
  • I did not know what I was going to promote.

Was it lack of action? Yes. Was it lack of direction? Yes. Was it problems with the tools? Yes. Was it a problem with time management? Yes. Stepping back though it all came down to the fact that I did not know what I did not know.

I had no strategic framework. I did not know what foundations I had to put in place.

I should have killed the shiny object syndrome once and for all right then. I did not. I kept going to the seminars. I kept signing up for lists. I kept receiving the emails. I kept buying new programs and new tools. My accountant tells me that I cannot claim deductions from income because I have not passed the measurable income test. Even the taxation office has cottoned onto shiny object syndrome – no income = no deductions.

A Strategic Framework

At one of those Internet Marketing seminars I sat with a few friends over dinner and crafted a strategic framework just like the management consultant in me should have done 3 years earlier. I present it here as part of a cure for shiny object syndrome

How am I doing on the syndrome?

  • I have stopped buying stuff that I might use
  • I have unsubscribed from a lot of lists
  • I have made something of an inventory of things I have bought
  • I am planning to deploy one of the things I have bought each week in the challenge and beyond.

The 2nd part of conquering shiny object syndrome is to Take Action. Use what you buy.

That gets me to week 3 of The Quick Start Challenge which is all about putting together a funnel for the first opt-in list building. For that we need domains (done), hosting (done), autoresponder (done) and page builder.

I have 4 page builders to choose from that I have bought. I will not buy another one. I have a working funnel built in one already. I am going to re-purpose that and modify the funnel so that it converts better. It has had 11,425 clicks and clickthroughs were 206 = 1.8%. Let’s see if I can improve on that. And part of the plan will be to migrate that funnel to Convertri, another page builder I bought, because it comes from a vibrant business that is growing and evolving. My other one does not.
