The Iceberg Effect: The Untold Secret

Affiliate Marketing is Changing

Have you felt that making money as an affiliate marketer is difficult – even impossible? You’ve tried everything and nothing seems to work. It is deeper than that. It is the untold secret they are keeping from you – the iceberg effect.

I completely understand. I’ve tried everything too. Affiliate marketing is a whole lot harder than it used to be. Like so many things, the forces of supply and demand have been at work. More competition has meant that product prices have come down. In the old days one could sell an eBook for $27 – not any more. With prices coming down, commissions have come down too – maybe not in percentage terms but certainly in absolute terms. The cost to acquire customers is going up too – all you have to do is do some keyword research on Google Adwords and see what the bidding war is doing on popular keywords.

Life beyond Affiliate Marketing

Now there are some ways to get past that.

You can make and sell your own products. This is not as hard as you imagine. – find some private label rights on your pet subject. Convert that into a series of videos and voila you have an eCourse ready to sell. Then recruit an army of affiliates to sell it for you. Success comes from keeping the content coming or growing the army of affiliates or from your own customer recruiting effort. There is a whole lot of stuff that has to go right – targeting; researching; branding; website building; memberships site; hosting; payment processing; customer service.

You can sell physical products. The attraction of selling physical products is the business is scalable. At first glance this is not as hard as you imagine. I started out making review sites in niche areas for products already listed on Amazon – toys, cooking equipment, drones, coffee machines. Problem is commission rates are really low – like 4%. Those rates push one to selling directly on Amazon and it was the buzz thing to do. The model was to rely on Amazon finding the customers and managing the customer support for you. Process was not too hard – find a niche; find a product, find a supplier in China; sign up for a contract and a first order (at volume); start drop shipping. I was heading down this path too – never did do that first big order. This got a little complicated with counterfeit issues and grey imports and stuff like that. Solution was to build a brand or redesign the product to get patent protection. The bad news is Amazon changed the rules of the game – they don’t really want to let a pile of independent suppliers profit on their platform. They want control. So the rules got changed = now too hard

The Untold Secret

Maybe there is another way. There are people out there who are successful at Internet Marketing. Think Russell Brunson or Ryan Deiss or Simon Hodgkinson or Jeremy Gislason or Matt Bacak.  They are  product people but they have people in their affiliate networks who are making a go of it. Imagine if someone like that wrote a fresh book about making money as an affiliate marketer. Something like Ryan Deiss did with The Invisible Selling Machine or Brendon Burchard did with The Motivation Manifesto. Sad story: I left my free copy of Brendon’s book on a plane once. Imagine if one of those successful people wrote the foreword. Even better imagine they gave it to you for free?

Well Dean Holland has done just that. Russell Brunson writes in the foreword

What Dean lays out in this book is a clear and precise blueprint that every affiliate marketer needs to know to thrive in today’s economy in the most sustainable and profitable way.

Introducing Dean Holland and his new book The Iceberg Effect. I am excited to be a co-branding partner too.

I have had my copy for a while now. I found it a really easy read packed with very specific ideas. I have been working with him as a partner for some time too.

Everything you need to succeed as an affiliate marketer can be found in there – Russell Brunson just wrote that too. Maybe the table of contents will give you some clues. I have annotated briefly what you will find. I do not want to give everything away.

  11. The Ultimate Funnel – a flow from acquiring customers to eventually selling premium and recurring products.

A Strategic View

I am a strategic thinker. I have written previously about strategic frameworks. Very few Internet marketers can articulate what they do in a stepped back 30,000 foot strategic framework. Dean Holland can and does – it is in his 4 core focus areas (Chapter 5) and in the Ultimate Funnel (Chapter 11). I have shared it before in this picture.

4 core focus areas

It is simple really.

  1. Generate traffic.
  2. Capture your prospect’s information.
  3. Follow up.
  4. Make offers and feed into a sales system.

Just keep cranking it up by adding more products (affiliate products at first and in time your own products) into the sales system. The ultimate funnel (Chapter 10) is all about how to do this scaling. The whole journey is about adding value to the customer. Scaling is all about adding more value so that the customer is comfortable to share more of what they expect to gain. In the book, Dean breaks down the exact steps to building a profitable affiliate marketing business – suited to 2020 times.
